Create your first LO...

You Will Need...

  • Choose a digital scrapkit
  • Choose the photos
  • Open Photoshop

Why Photoshop?

The digital scrapbooking needs a software that allows you to work on layers. This is important thing because, if you don't have the layers, you can't manage all the elements of your layout, including your pictures. So “the layers” are absolutely the most important characteristic of the software you need for making a digital LO. (LO stands for Layout).

tipYou can also use other softwares. GIMP, for example, is free and it allows you to work on layers as photoshop does.

What's a digital scrapkit?

First of all you need a complete scrapkit. A digital scrap-kit is a pack that, basically, contains all the elements and the backgrounds (usually called “Papers”, reminding the “no-digital” scrapbooking) you need for creating your pages.

Look inside the Scrapkit...

This scrapkit includes:

24 Elements (flowers, shapes, leaves and so on)

4 Papers

A page is usually composed by a Paper (or a group or stacked papers), a few elements and photos.

First of all you should open the Paper: it will be the background of your work. Then you will develope the elements and photos arrangement on it.

tipCreate a shape: just use the Shape Tool and select the rectangular one. Obviously, you can choose whatever shape you like: also a star, an ellipse, a triangle and so on.
tipDrop Shadow: click on the right button of the mouse and select “Blending Option”. Now set your parameters in Drop Shadow field and choose a color similar to the background. It's useful for giving a sense of realism. Drop Shadow is not always black.
tipCopy Layer Style and Paste it: you can always copy the parameters of a layer and paste them to other layers. For example, if you want to transfer the shadow effect from a layer to another, just go to the layers palettes and copy and paste by clicking with the right button of the mouse.
tipClipping mask: put your picture above the photo shape and click the right button of the mouse, now click on clipping mask.
tipUse automatic selection: check the automatic selection. This allows you to select automatically the layer when mouse is over it. Click alt+T for rotating and resize. In order to keep proportions, you should lock height and width. You can also duplicate the layer, pressing alt and dragging it at the same time.
