How to operate your Tiburon in Amphibious Mode

You Will Need...

  • A Hyundai Tiburon with Amphibious Mode feature
  • A re-aquifier
  • Cat food (optional)

Introduction:

Operating your Hyundai Tiburon in amphibious mode can be a rewarding and moistening experience. By following these simple steps, you can fully avail yourself of the unique qualities of this vehicle, while ensuring the safety and comfort of your passengers and pets (note: tested on Cats only).

Check if your Tiburon contains the Amphibious Mode feature

Amphibious mode is a non-standard feature, but it is possible your Tiburon may contain it without your knowledge. In most cars, the toggle switch is located near the "lock windows" button on the driver side armrest. By activating the switch, the windows will lock (an obvious safety feature for your underwater voyage) and possibly a small dashboard light will appear. In my car, it looked a lot like the "check engine" light.

Select a Body of Water

Once you have activated Amphibious Mode, you will need to find a suitable body of water for your adventuring. It is recommended that you start with a shallow, lightly salinated lake or bay, so you can become comfortable with the finer nuances of Amphibious Mode before delving deeper.

Operating your Vehicle in Amphibious Mode

Ease your Tiburon into your selected body of water, preferably via a gradual incline slope. It is not recommended to plunge Dukes of Hazard style off the end of a dock. After some initial settling, your car will likely begin to sink - a normal process in underwater driving. Minor leakage points should be noted for future caulking. Major leakage points should be noted as an indicator that your car is not Amphibious.

Experiment with the controls to get a feel for how your car operates while in Amphibious Mode. Shifting gears tends to change ballast levels to control depth; reverse can be used to control the yaw. Be careful to avoid extensive tilt.

Caring for Passengers and Cats

Your passengers will likely be thrilled at this unique opportunity to view the underwater depths from the comfort of your car. Should they begin hyperventilating/screaming that your car is not Amphibious/clawing at your face (more of a problem with Cats), I recommend use of the re-aquifier.

Pets such as cats will be less receptive to underwater voyages, especially if kept in the trunk, which tends to be especially leaky. Keep plenty of cat food on hand to keep them satisfied.

Making the Most of your Amphibious Car

Don't be afraid to try new things! Try driving through rivers! Try driving across the English Channel (not tested/recommended)! Try driving with underwater parrots! In the winter, activate Amphibious Mode and drive around on the ice until you bust through! The options are endless. Just don't forget to bring a towel!
